Alessandro Rapinese, the mayor of Como, has implemented a ban on bikes in the walled historical centre of the city, which will come into force in September. The new rule targets approximately 30 streets, requiring all cyclists, whether on e-bikes or push bikes, to dismount and walk through these areas.
Mayor Rapinese defended his decision, stating that it was influenced by his personal experience of being hit by an electric bike in June. He told Ansa, "People act based on their own experiences and I know what it’s like to be hit by one of these beasts." The collision occurred as he was leaving city hall.
The mayor cited public safety, particularly in an area frequented by tourists, as a reason for the ban. Critics, including resident groups and politicians, have accused Rapinese of a personal vendetta. A local civic group, Nova Como, has organised a protest ride through the affected streets planned for mid-September.
