The debate around compulsory voting comes amid concerns about voter turnout in British politics. In the 2024 general election, only three in five registered voters participated. A significant turnout gap was observed, with a 25 percentage point difference between the oldest and youngest age groups, and a 20 point gap between university graduates and those with the least educational qualifications.
Proponents argue that compulsory voting could address this turnout issue and ensure politicians better reflect the electorate. Opponents, however, suggest that compelling citizens to vote sets a low bar for state intervention in a liberal society and could lead to less informed participation.
