Mixed martial arts icon Conor McGregor is facing another significant period on the sidelines, requiring surgery on his right leg after sustaining an injury in the opening seconds of his highly anticipated comeback fight. The incident occurred on Saturday, 10 July 2026, during his bout against Max Holloway at UFC 329 in Las Vegas, leading to an immediate loss for the Irish fighter.
Despite the immediate and frustrating setback, McGregor, who is due to celebrate his 38th birthday this Tuesday, has already expressed his unwavering determination to return to the Octagon. Taking to social media, he stated, "Surgery. Prehab. Return to martial arts practice. Go again." He also noted this was the "Final fight of the contract. Praise God!"
McGregor conveyed profound frustration following the fight, insisting he had been fully fit beforehand. In a post, he wrote, "My head gasket is gone. Destroyed. I had no injury/injuries going into the fight. I was throwing kicks, planted and jumping, all throughout camp as well as backstage before the fight. This came out of nowhere. I am beyond dark here. I can only describe it as hell." This latest injury adds to a career punctuated by serious physical challenges, including a torn ACL sustained in 2013 and a broken leg suffered during his 2021 loss to Dustin Poirier.
A former two-weight UFC champion, McGregor achieved significant knockout victories over Jose Aldo and Eddie Alvarez during the peak of his career. However, since defeating Alvarez in November 2016, his fight record has seen a downturn, with four losses in his five subsequent UFC appearances. These include a submission defeat to Khabib Nurmagomedov in 2018, consecutive losses to Poirier in 2021, and the recent defeat to Holloway where he failed to land a blow before the injury.
With one fight remaining on his current UFC contract, McGregor's long-term future in the sport remains a subject of considerable speculation. However, the organisation appears to be supportive of another potential comeback. UFC CEO Dana White noted the significant public interest in Saturday's fight and revealed he had already considered "five ideas" for McGregor's next opponent, had he emerged victorious against Holloway. McGregor's overall mixed martial arts record now stands at 22 wins and seven defeats from 29 fights.
