A 7-week consultation has been launched by the Environment Agency concerning South West Water's application to permanently use a new long sea outfall from Exmouth sewage treatment works.
The new outfall, located approximately 300m south of Straight Point, is intended to discharge treated wastewater. During periods of heavy rainfall, it may also discharge settled storm sewage.
The Environment Agency has granted conditional temporary permission for the outfall to operate, citing its role in reducing pollution risks to Exmouth Beach bathing water and the Exe Estuary. However, South West Water needs to modify its environmental permits for permanent operation.
South West Water must demonstrate that its proposals meet environmental standards, comply with Environment Agency policy, and protect people, wildlife, and designated sites, including shellfish waters, bathing waters, and conservation areas.
