New research suggests that consumers are largely resistant to AI-generated content and interactions. One study revealed that human-written books were viewed more positively across all investigated dimensions compared to those written by AI. While AI titles reportedly constitute up to 20% of Amazon's ebook catalogue, they only accounted for 12% of sales and 10% of bestsellers in their genre.
The trend extends to the music industry, where global consultancy Bain found that 62% of consumers would not engage with AI-generated music. French streaming service Deezer reported that fully AI-generated music made up 18% of daily uploads but only about 0.5% of listening, with up to 70% of these streams appearing fraudulent.
Consumer preference for human interaction is also evident in customer service. Studies show that informing customers they are engaging with chatbots in outbound calls reduces purchase rates by 79.7%. In 2025, Deloitte found that 74% of customers preferred human interaction even for routine banking questions, and chatbots were the least popular form of customer service engagement, chosen voluntarily by only 8% of respondents in another international 2025 study.
