Container Ship Sinks Near Strait of Hormuz Amid Surge in Iranian Attacks

A container ship has sunk and another cargo vessel is reportedly sinking near the Strait of Hormuz, following a sharp increase in Iranian attacks on shipping.

  • The Singapore-flagged GFS Pride container ship sank on Wednesday.
  • The Antigua and Barbuda-flagged Cape Dao is also reportedly sinking.
  • The UKMTO reported at least five incidents, including drone strikes, in the 48 hours prior to Wednesday.

A container ship has sunk near the Strait of Hormuz, and a second cargo vessel is reportedly sinking, amidst a significant increase in Iranian attacks on shipping. This marks the sharpest uptick in such incidents since the beginning of the US-Israel war with Iran.

The Singapore-flagged GFS Pride container ship sank on Wednesday after an attack the previous day. Separately, the Antigua and Barbuda-flagged Cape Dao is reported to be sinking close to the strait, having been hit by a projectile on 23 September, according to maritime security sources.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported at least five incidents, including drone strikes, targeting tankers and other commercial ships around the Hormuz area in the 48 hours leading up to Wednesday. A maritime security source described the increase in strikes as deliberate.

Iran stated that a cargo ship sank after hitting a naval mine while using an unauthorised passage through the strait, with state television quoting the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corp (IRGC). However, the UKMTO suggested that both ships were hit by unidentified projectiles, raising questions about Iran's account.

The surge in attacks suggests Iran may be attempting to close the strategic waterway, potentially to influence US midterm elections on 3 November by frustrating efforts to reduce fuel prices. US fuel prices have increased by almost 70% since the US war on Iran began.

Why this matters: The increased attacks and potential closure of the Strait of Hormuz could impact global oil prices and the US midterm elections.
