Cornell University will examine the role of fraternities and sororities on campus, according to the Ivy League school's president, Michael Kotlikoff. This decision follows an outcry regarding the university's handling of a student's rape allegations.
A civil lawsuit was filed last month by a woman who alleges she was drugged and raped in 2024 by several members of the Chi Phi fraternity. The accused men have denied all wrongdoing.
President Kotlikoff stated in a video message that the university would take steps to prevent similar situations and would seek input from students, alumni, and others. He also vowed that university officials would "be more transparent" about their actions related to the 2024 incident, though he did not detail specific initiatives.
Cornell has defended its handling of the matter, stating it launched a comprehensive investigation, barred the Chi Phi fraternity from campus, and imposed disciplinary measures, including expulsions. New York state officials have appointed a special prosecutor to investigate the case.
