A monkey sanctuary near Looe, Cornwall, is closing after more than 60 years following the collapse of plans for a buyer. Wild Futures, the charity that runs the sanctuary, stated on its social media and website that the park had developed "structural issues" making it unsuitable for long-term use.
The charity, established in 1964, had put the site on the market in June 2025 and believed it had found a buyer. However, after six months of negotiations, the plans fell through.
Sarah Hanson, the charity's director, said it would not be responsible to invest significant funds into a site no longer suitable, as ongoing maintenance costs exceeded available financial resources. The charity has begun rehoming monkeys to selected sanctuaries and organisations, prioritising their welfare, and plans to launch an emergency appeal to cover rehoming costs.
