South African prosecutors have withdrawn fraud and corruption charges against criminal intelligence chief Lt-Gen Dumisani Khumalo and six other police officers. The charges were formally dropped at a court in Pretoria after a review last month by the country's chief prosecutor.
Lt-Gen Khumalo and his colleagues were arrested in June 2025 over the allegedly unlawful appointment of a civilian, Dineo Mokwele, to a key post within the intelligence unit. They had denied the charges and were not suspended.
Prosecutors had claimed Ms Mokwele was unqualified for the senior technical support services position. However, the Madlanga Commission, a judicial inquiry into alleged police corruption, heard that she was qualified and held numerous certificates. Andrea Johnson, former head of a specialised unit within the National Prosecuting Authority, apologised for remarks made about Ms Mokwele, admitting she was unaware of her qualifications.
Lt-Gen Khumalo, who became head of Crime Intelligence in 2022, expressed relief outside court, stating that the "truth at least is out."
