A heart-stopping incident on the A1 in Nottinghamshire has cut short a Staffordshire couple's 41st wedding anniversary celebrations. Tragically, Mike Savings, 66, and his wife Shirley Savings, 64, from Lichfield, were killed instantly when their Harley-Davidson Trike motorcycle was involved in a multi-vehicle collision on the southbound carriageway of the A1 at Tuxford.

Emergency services were called to the scene shortly after 3:30 PM BST on Monday. The incident also involved a Vauxhall Grandland car and a Scania flatbed lorry, with Mr and Mrs Savings dying at the scene, Nottinghamshire Police confirmed.

The couple had spent the previous week touring Scotland, visiting various locations including the Commando Memorial at Spean Bridge. It was there that they paid their respects to Mike's late father, who fought during D-Day.

In a poignant tribute issued through the police, their two sons expressed their profound loss. "Our parents' unique energies and perspectives will be cherished and missed greatly" by all who knew them, they said. The couple, who met at a nightclub, had maintained a strong love for life and each other throughout their more than 40 years of marriage and two children.

Nottinghamshire Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash and are appealing for any witnesses to come forward. Anyone with information is urged to contact the force on 101.
