The sparks didn't quite fly as expected for Alexandra Daddario and Josh Gad's new comedy drama, 'Couples Weekend', which has left critics feeling decidedly underwhelmed. The film promised to bring the laughs and heartache in equal measure, but unfortunately, it's failed to deliver on its promise of a sizzling couples' romp.
Debs (Daddario), a book editor with a taste for adventure, and Mitch (Gad), her college buddy turned investment banker, embark on a New Year's trip to a secluded cabin with their partners in tow. There's Debs' nature-photographer boyfriend Josh (Daveed Diggs) and Melanie (Ashley Park), a bestselling cookbook author who's caught the eye of the high-flying Mitch. The setup is ripe for drama and humour, but it soon becomes clear that something's amiss – and not just in the relationships.
When Debs and Mitch stumble upon their partners' affair, the film should be cooking on all cylinders – incisive drama, comedic gold, or at least a few laughs. But instead, critics have panned 'Couples Weekend' for its clunky, cringeworthy moments of yelling and sobbing. The performances are often described as over-the-top, while the dialogue strains to find its footing.
There's one fleeting moment of genuine connection – courtesy of a moonshine-fuelled honesty-breakthrough – but it's too little, too late for this lacklustre effort. It seems 'Couples Weekend' has squandered its promising premise, failing to deliver the insightful commentary on relationships or comedic relief that audiences crave.
The timing couldn't be worse, either, as Olivia Wilde's 'The Invite' – a film that tackles similar themes with far more finesse – hits UK screens. The comparison only serves to highlight the shortcomings of 'Couples Weekend', leaving viewers feeling disappointed and underwhelmed.
