Coventry City, fresh from their promotion to the Premier League, are reportedly on the cusp of a significant transfer deal for Eintracht Frankfurt defender Aurele Amenda. The proposed move for the Switzerland international centre-back is understood to be worth more than £17 million, representing a substantial investment for the Sky Blues as they prepare for their return to top-flight football.
The agreement is said to involve an initial fee of £15.4 million, with an additional £1.7 million in performance-related add-ons. Should the deal proceed, Amenda is expected to commit to a four-year contract with the club. Sources indicate that Coventry manager Frank Lampard, alongside the club's recruitment team, played a crucial role in persuading Amenda to consider the move to the West Midlands.
Amenda was part of the Switzerland squad that reached the quarter-finals of the World Cup, though he did not feature in any matches during the tournament. His potential arrival would make him Coventry’s third major signing of the summer transfer window. He would follow winger Loum Tchaouna, who joined from Burnley, and midfielder Frank Onyeka, whose loan move from Brentford was made permanent earlier this summer.
Beyond the defensive reinforcements, Coventry City is also actively pursuing a new goalkeeper. While Brighton's Carl Rushworth remains a primary target, an agreement has yet to be reached. Chelsea's Filip Jorgensen is reportedly being considered as an alternative option should the deal for Rushworth not materialise.
With manager Frank Lampard's contract recently extended, Coventry City has already begun its pre-season preparations. Their first public friendly match saw them face a 3-2 defeat behind closed doors against Wimbledon. Upcoming fixtures include matches against Northampton Town and Spanish side Espanyol, as they fine-tune their squad for their highly anticipated first Premier League campaign in 25 years.
