Cricket, archery, and shooting are among the sports well placed to secure a spot at the Commonwealth Games in India in 2030. These discussions are ongoing between Commonwealth Sport, sporting federations, and the Indian organising committee for the Games, which will be held in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
The current Glasgow Games feature only 10 sports due to a rushed build-up after Victoria, Australia, withdrew as hosts. However, the sporting programme for Ahmedabad is set to expand to 17 sports, with Commonwealth Sport chief executive Katie Sadlier stating, "17 is, we think, the right number."
Raghu Iyer of the India Olympic Association hinted at a preference for sports where India has historically excelled, noting, "There are sports in which India has done very well, shooting, archery and many other sports." Cricket's inclusion is further bolstered by the plan to add at least two team sports for 2030, with hockey and rugby sevens also being considered.
India, as the host nation, can also propose two new sports and advocate for others with significant domestic appeal. The 2030 Games will mark the Commonwealth's centenary, with events planned for the 120,000-seater Narendra Modi Stadium.
