Chaos erupted in the North East Premier League as a rogue bull brought play to an abrupt halt at Burnopfield Cricket Club near Newcastle. The drama unfolded when a 800kg juvenile bull, which had broken free from a nearby farm, charged onto the pitch at around 3pm on Saturday.
The behemoth of a beast – described by club director Martin Oswell as 'incredibly fit and athletic' – seemed to relish in the chaos it was causing, refusing to budge despite efforts from farmers, police, and even a decoy cow to lure it off the field.
As the bull continued its rampage, safety concerns grew, forcing the match between Burnopfield CC (226-3) and Hetton Lyons to be abandoned. The decision was met with disappointment from the home side, who were looking to cement their position as second in the league table.
Oswell revealed that the bull's owner had tried to coax it off the field using a cow, but ultimately the animal left of its own accord – albeit not before leaving the cricket club and its players shaken. For now, the focus is on the welfare of both the players and the errant bull, with questions remaining over how such an incident could have occurred.
