Cristiano Ronaldo has been provisionally suspended by the Portuguese football federation (FPF), which has initiated disciplinary proceedings against the 41-year-old. This action follows his decision to walk out on the national team.
Ronaldo issued an apology to supporters on Tuesday, while also criticising Portugal coach Jorge Jesus. He stated that he would accept any “suspension that is imposed” on him.
The FPF confirmed that disciplinary proceedings had been opened, according to Portuguese newspaper A Bola. The federation was quoted as saying that a “non-automatic preventive suspension of the player was determined, and the proceedings were given urgent status,” without prejudice to any automatic preventive suspension.
Ronaldo explained that his departure from Copenhagen, prior to Portugal’s Nations League match against Denmark last week, stemmed from a dispute with Jesus. Ronaldo claimed that Jesus had agreed to a plan for him to miss the Norway and Denmark matches to manage his fitness, but then told him on the day of the Norway game that he would play for 30 minutes. Ronaldo stated, “The manager had broken his word to me.”
