CrossCountry to run full service Monday after power outage disruption

CrossCountry plans to operate a full train service on Monday following significant disruption caused by a power outage at its Birmingham control centre.

  • CrossCountry services were severely disrupted on Sunday due to a power outage at its Birmingham control centre.
  • A limited number of trains were planned to run from Sunday evening, primarily on routes towards Leicester and Derby.
  • The operator advises customers to check their journey before travelling and offers compensation for delays or refunds for cancelled travel.

Train operator CrossCountry is set to run a full service on Monday, 24 August 2026, after a power outage at its Birmingham control centre caused widespread cancellations across its network on Sunday.

The operator stated its key priority is to restore a normal service. A limited number of trains were expected to run from around 18:00 BST on Sunday evening, mainly on routes towards Leicester and Derby.

CrossCountry has advised customers to check their journey details before travelling. Passengers delayed by 30 minutes or more may be entitled to compensation, while those who choose not to travel can claim a refund.

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander welcomed the news of resumed services, thanking engineers for their efforts. The National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT) has called for a review of railway operational control centres to prevent future power outage disruptions.

What this means for you: If you are a CrossCountry customer, you are strongly advised to check your journey before travelling on Monday. You may be entitled to compensation if delayed by 30 minutes or more, or a refund if you choose not to travel.
