The Côtes Catalanes Indication Géographique Protégée (IGP), located in Languedoc-Roussillon in southern France, provides winemakers with more flexibility than the more prestigious Appellation d’Origine Protégée (AOP) designation. This freedom allows for the production of single-varietal wines and a wider range of grape blends, with many producers adopting organic or biodynamic practices.
The region's unique geography and climate contribute to the distinctive character of its wines. With approximately 300 days of sunshine annually, low rainfall, hot days, cool nights, and strong Tramontane winds, the area presents challenging but rewarding viticultural conditions. Thibault Ponthier of Domaine Le Roc des Anges highlights the "amazing mosaic of terroirs," encompassing various geological formations such as schist, marl, clay, limestone, and granite within less than 5,000 hectares of vines.
These conditions result in intensely mineral and concentrated wines, which are described as offering excellent value. Examples include the L’apprentie Sorcière du Clos des Fees Rosé 2025 at £14.75 and the Le Roc des Anges Segna de Cor 2023, priced between £16 and £20.
