Sam Curran delivered a sensational all-round performance to power MI London to a commanding seven-wicket victory against Sunrisers Leeds in the much-anticipated opening match of The Hundred men's competition at The Oval. Curran's unbeaten half-century, coupled with a crucial two-wicket haul, ensured a dominant start for the side previously known as Oval Invincibles, who have secured the last three men's titles.
Chasing a target of 144, MI London reached 144-3 with 16 balls to spare, largely thanks to Curran's composed 60 not out from 39 deliveries. He forged a match-winning 93-run partnership for the fourth wicket with Nicholas Pooran, who unleashed a destructive innings of 58 not out from just 22 balls. Pooran's blistering knock, which included five fours and five sixes, shifted the momentum decisively in favour of MI London.
Earlier in the day, Sunrisers Leeds struggled to build significant momentum after being put in to bat. They were eventually bowled out for 143 from 99 balls. Australian all-rounder Mitchell Marsh provided the brightest spark for the Sunrisers, top-scoring with 41 runs from 27 deliveries. However, his departure led to a slump, despite a late cameo of 31 from 18 balls by Tom Alsop.
MI London's bowling attack was led admirably by Richard Gleeson, who claimed impressive figures of 4-25. Sam Curran also played a significant role with the ball, picking up 2-27. Sunrisers' England white-ball captain Harry Brook managed just eight runs, and skipper Zak Crawley contributed 13, highlighting the difficulties faced by the Leeds-based franchise in posting a challenging total.
The comprehensive win sets a strong precedent for MI London as they begin their campaign to defend their title. Brydon Carse offered some resistance for Sunrisers Leeds with figures of 2-18, but ultimately, the batting prowess of Curran and Pooran proved too much to overcome. The tournament continues on Wednesday with Southern Brave facing Welsh Fire in Southampton.
