Dan Evans' storied singles career has come to a close, as he succumbed 7-5 6-0 to Tristan Schoolkate in the second round of Wimbledon qualifying. The usually reliable line calling system had other plans, throwing up an unexpected technical hitch that delayed play for over an hour – just enough time for Evans and his fans to wonder if this could be it.
Evans had been gunning for a wildcard spot in the main draw at SW19, needing three victories in Roehampton. He certainly gave it a go, conjuring up a thrilling first set that left the packed crowd on their feet – including one dazzling diving forehand winner that sent them wild. But ultimately, Schoolkate's power proved too much to handle, and Evans was unable to regain momentum upon resumption of play.
The usually stoic Brit was gracious in defeat, stating, "I've had plenty of time to think about this decision – I'm happy with it. It's time for me to move on." Schoolkate, meanwhile, paid tribute to his opponent: "Dan is an absolute legend and a phenomenal player. I wish him all the best for what comes next."
While Evans may have hung up his singles racket, he'll still be in action at Wimbledon – albeit in doubles, where he's been granted a wildcard alongside Henry Searle. The duo will be looking to make some magic happen on the famous Centre Court lawns.
In other qualifying news, Billy Harris, Oliver Tarvet and Max Basing all put in a good shift under sweltering conditions, with temperatures reaching a sizzling 34C. Not that it fazed them – Harris took down Zsombor Piros 6-4 6-4, while Tarvet outlasted Alexis Galarneau 7-5 6-2. Basing is now just one win away from a Grand Slam main draw debut.
In the women's draw, Heather Watson battled her way past Tatiana Prozorova in a real nail-biter – but it wasn't all smiles for British fans, as Esther Adeshina, Henry Searle and Paul Jubb all fell by the wayside.
