A dancer and choreographer based in Los Angeles has found an unusual way to draw attention to the issue of rubbish. She creates videos for TikTok and Instagram where she dresses up as pieces of litter and mimics their movements as they are blown by the wind.
The artist began making these "duet" videos during the pandemic, inspired by observing litter on her daily walks. Her first TikTok video, posted in October 2023, recreated a dog poo bag blowing in the wind. After a video imitating an empty takeaway box in a plastic bag gained 3 million views, she continued the project.
She has since posted more than 100 videos, each captioned "PSA: Please pick up your trash." For her costumes, she layers existing clothing and uses safety pins instead of glue or tape to avoid creating new waste. The litter she chooses to film must be synthetic and moving in the wind.
After filming the litter, she disposes of it in a bin. She then creates an outfit to resemble the item and films herself in a similar location, editing the two videos together. She hopes her work will encourage people to notice rubbish and consider picking it up.
