A "dangerous" crocodilian, identified as a spectacled caiman, was recovered from a suburban home in Hale, Greater Manchester, on Wednesday. The animal is classified as dangerous under the Dangerous Wild Animal Act 1976.
A python was also found at the semi-detached property. Both animals have since been moved to a zoo, according to Trafford Council.
The recovery followed reports that the caiman was being kept without a licence. The operation was led by Trafford Council and involved police and the RSPCA.
RSPCA exotic animal expert Evie Button stated that these animals have highly specialised needs that are difficult to meet in a domestic setting, and their welfare can be severely compromised when kept as pets. Trafford Councillor Keleigh Glenton added that species like the caiman require expert handling and proper environments, necessitating a Dangerous Wild Animal Licence for owners.
