Former England international and football pundit Danny Murphy has drawn a close to the unusual saga of his cat, Bob, which captivated football fans during his recent World Cup commentary appearances. The story, initially revealed in snippets, detailed Bob's disappearance, his eventual return, and the subsequent 'red card' decision made by Murphy's family due to the feline's changed temperament.
Murphy, aged 49, first hinted at the unfolding drama during the Norway versus Ivory Coast World Cup match on 30th June. He initially disclosed that Bob had vanished after seemingly entering a Royal Mail delivery van. This initial revelation sparked a flurry of interest and some critical reactions across social media platforms, with viewers eager for more details.
During his next commentary stint, for the Spain versus Austria game, Murphy provided an update, confirming that Bob had indeed returned home weeks after his disappearance. However, the cat's behaviour had reportedly become 'feral', leading to significant challenges within the household.
The full extent of Bob's post-disappearance antics, including his 'red card' moment, was finally shared by Murphy during Portugal's 1-0 defeat to Spain. Murphy explained that attempts to reintegrate Bob into the family home proved unsuccessful, primarily due to the cat's aggressive interactions with his sister, Mary. This led to the decision to rehome Bob with friends' parents in Preston, where he later passed away.
Murphy stated, "We did try and settle Bob back into the house, but he started bullying and fighting his sister, Mary. We made the decision to give him the red card and send him up the road to Preston. I think it was the right decision." The conclusion of the highly unusual tale coincided with other significant events at the World Cup, including Spain's victory and the departure of Portugal's head coach, Roberto Martinez.
