The daughter of a Northampton woman brutally murdered by her estranged husband has made an emotional plea for her mother to be remembered for her life, not just her death. Kimberley Thompson, 43, was killed by Michael Thompson, 56, in August last year, who later attempted to conceal the crime by staging it as a suicide. Michael Thompson was handed a life sentence on Tuesday at Nottingham Crown Court, with a minimum term of 33 years.
Kimberley's daughter, Athena, shared her heartbreak, stating, "I don't want people to know my mother as only a victim... she was the most loving, kind, thoughtful person to ever exist, and without a doubt the best mother a daughter could ask for." She spoke of the shattering impact of losing her mother in such a violent way, describing it as having "completely shattered and destroyed my world," leaving her battling constant grief and a profound feeling of abandonment.
The court heard disturbing details of Michael Thompson's history of domestic abuse against Kimberley, which included years of controlling and coercive behaviour, as well as physical violence. He had also made hundreds of hours of recordings of her before ultimately suffocating her at their Pinewood Road home.
Athena highlighted the rare and devastating nature of her loss, noting that while 3-4% of children lose a parent before 18, only around 0.0004% lose their mother due to their father murdering them. "My mum was my best friend, she was meant to be constant in every part of my life, and I was supposed to make countless more memories with her," she said, adding that her mother was her "rock."
Kimberley's sisters also paid tribute, with Dionne describing her as "the kindest mother, daughter, sister, auntie and friend." She expressed the permanent void left by the "selfish act," stating, "We will never get over the loss and pain caused by this selfish act." Another sister, Amanda, spoke of the devastating impact on Kimberley's children, who have not only lost their mother but also the stability and security every child deserves, now navigating their futures without her love and guidance.
