Renowned musician Dave Matthews has publicly denounced the killing of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a 52-year-old father of three, by a US federal immigration officer in Houston last week. Araujo, an undocumented Mexican national who had resided in the United States for 35 years, was shot during a traffic stop on a Tuesday morning, in circumstances that remain disputed by witnesses present at the scene.
Matthews, 59, addressed the incident during a performance in Camden, New Jersey, on Friday. Fan-recorded footage captured the singer-songwriter expressing his frustration, questioning why society allows for justifications of violence. He stated, "I don't know why we let people make excuses for why we should kill each other... We tell our children to use their words, but then when they grow up they wonder what's wrong with us."
The artist specifically named Araujo, whom he described as a "father and grandfather who was murdered by ICE in Houston, Texas." Matthews further highlighted that officials had confirmed Araujo was not the intended target of the traffic stop, exclaiming, "Well then, don't pull the trigger you arseholes!" His impassioned comments, which included an apology for his strong language, were met with significant cheering and applause from the audience.
According to official statements, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo was indeed not the individual immigration authorities were seeking during the traffic stop. The other occupants of the vehicle – Araujo's brother and two co-workers – were also reportedly not the targets. These men, who are the only known witnesses to the shooting, have since claimed that immigration authorities are now pressuring them to sign deportation orders to leave the country.
This is not an isolated instance of Matthews speaking out against the actions of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). In January, he criticised the Trump administration following the death of Renee Nicole Good, who was also killed by an immigration officer in Minneapolis. At the time, Matthews posted a video on social media stating, "I don't want my taxes to pay for ICE, to masked thugs to roam our streets and terrorise our communities and rip families apart." Since Araujo's death, there have also been reports of ICE agents being responsible for the death of a 26-year-old in Maine.
