The relentless torrent of rain sweeping across Asia has unleashed devastating floods and landslides on a catastrophic scale, leaving in its wake a trail of death, destruction, and displacement. At the epicentre of the disaster is Vietnam, where the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting reported an astonishing 206mm of rain within a 24-hour period in southern Phuc Than. The resulting flash flooding ravaged the village of Muong Than early on Friday morning, claiming at least four lives and leaving four others unaccounted for. The deluge also destroyed a substantial 238 hectares (588 acres) of farmland and brought about significant power disruptions.

South Korea was also severely affected by the downpour, with totals approaching 200mm in some areas. Paju, situated just north of Seoul, recorded an astonishing 192.5mm of rain, resulting in widespread flooding of homes and critical road networks across the region. Authorities are racing to assess the full extent of the damage and provide vital assistance to affected communities.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, Europe continues to grapple with a prolonged heatwave driven by an air flow originating from Africa. Southern Italy remains under a red weather warning, with temperatures in Palermo forecast to soar above 40C on Monday and Tuesday, significantly exceeding the seasonal average by more than 10C. The intense heat plume is then anticipated to shift westwards throughout the week, pushing temperatures above 40C across large parts of Spain, with some areas potentially experiencing highs exceeding 45C.

Further afield in the Eastern Pacific Ocean, Tropical Storm Elida developed last week, reaching peak wind speeds of 70mph just shy of Category 1 hurricane strength. Although forecast to track northwards this week and weaken without making landfall, Elida's trajectory has implications for global shipping lanes and trade routes. A second tropical storm, Fausto, formed in the Eastern Pacific on Sunday and is expected to intensify into a Category 2 hurricane later this week as it moves westwards. The Western Atlantic has had a relatively quiet hurricane season so far, but a tropical depression in the Gulf of Mexico currently threatens to evolve into Tropical Storm Bertha, posing a significant flooding risk to the south-eastern United States.
