Luna Wong, a 16-year-old student from Hong Kong, died by suicide in July 2023 while attending a summer school placement in London. She had moved to the UK in September 2022 to study A-levels at Wrekin College in Shropshire.
Her parents, Hilda Leong and Thomas Wong, had discussed Luna's depression and anxiety with Wrekin College before her admission, and felt the school was equipped to support her. Luna had experienced mental health struggles since 2019, following political unrest in Hong Kong and Covid lockdowns, leading to diagnoses of depression and anxiety.
The family had hoped the move to the UK would provide a fresh start for Luna, who was fluent in English and wanted to study psychology. Her parents used Thomas Wong's pension to cover the cost of her education.
