The Ministry of Defence's budget is witnessing unprecedented growth this year, with defence spending rising by £31 billion for air and space capabilities. This substantial allocation will enable the development of a hybrid Air Force that incorporates advanced airspace and missile defence sensor systems, integrating new commands to enhance operational effectiveness. Furthermore, £5 billion has been earmarked for drones and autonomous capabilities, aiming to make the Royal Air Force Europe's first sixth-generation air force.
The investment will also underpin the delivery of three key combat air platforms: Typhoon, F-35, and Tempest. Lord Coaker highlighted that this modernisation drive is a core component of the government's comprehensive defence strategy, outlined in recent publications such as the Strategic Defence Review, Defence Industrial Strategy, Defence Diplomacy Strategy, and the Defence Investment Plan.
A central theme of the Minister's address was the pivotal role of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and start-ups in the defence sector. The newly launched Enterprise Gateway at Farnborough is designed to facilitate the entry and integration of these agile businesses into the defence supply chain, with a focus on collaboration between states, military, and industry.
The announcement follows a period of significant strategic recalibration for UK defence, which Lord Coaker noted began in July 2024. At that time, the government recognised the need for increased investment and a new vision to address evolving threats, moving away from technologies designed for older forms of warfare. The current government's comprehensive vision seeks to ensure that the UK's frontline forces are fully supported by a mobilised and innovative supply network, treating industry as a trusted partner rather than a separate entity.
