Dutch cyclist Demi Vollering has won stage five of the women's Giro d'Italia, propelling herself up the overall standings to second place. The 26-year-old Vollering completed the 142km stage from Castelfranco Veneto to Piancavallo in 3 hours and 34 minutes, beating the previous day's winner, Lotte Kopecky from Belgium.
The stage five victory moved Vollering from seventh to second place overall, with Anna Van der Breggen of the Netherlands maintaining the pink jersey after five stages. Van der Breggen finished 12th in stage five, 2 minutes and 21 seconds behind Vollering.
The women's Giro d'Italia began on 6 May and will conclude on 28 May, with six more stages to go. The riders will face a gruelling 1,036km course, featuring 13 stages and six mountain passes.
Vollering's win is a significant boost for her team, SD Worx, who now hold two of the top three positions in the overall standings. The team's coach, Carlo Frediani, praised Vollering's performance, saying, 'Demi rode an incredible stage, and her teammates supported her perfectly.'
