A devastating wildfire in Derbyshire has burned an area of over 600 hectares since it began last month, according to data from the European Forest Fire Information System (Effis). The fire, which started at Tintwistle Moor near Glossop on 24 June, is equivalent to roughly 900 football pitches. Fire crews are currently at the scene, managing hotspots and dealing with flare-ups, as reported by the fire service.
The fire service has urged members of the public to avoid the area and to respect road closure signs near the Tintwistle fire, allowing emergency responders to safely access the affected areas. People have also been warned to stay away from areas affected by the fire and to avoid using barbecues or starting campfires on moorland.
Furthermore, satellite imagery captured by Planet Labs last Friday showcases the significant impact of the fires. In a separate incident, a wildfire at Dovestone Reservoir, north of the Tintwistle blaze, has damaged around 90 hectares of land, according to Effis estimates.
England and Wales have seen a total of 342 wildfires up to 6 July, as reported by the National Fire Chiefs Council. The fire service's efforts to combat the blaze are ongoing, with firefighters expected to remain on the scene for several more days.
