The black, fitted, off-the-shoulder dress worn by Diana, Princess of Wales, in September 1994, known as the “revenge dress,” will be put up for auction by Sotheby’s in December. This marks the first time the garment has been available for sale since 1997.
Designed by Christina Stambolian, the dress is expected to sell for between £110,000 and £220,000. Before the auction in New York, it will be displayed at Sotheby's in London this month, followed by exhibitions in Hong Kong and Geneva.
Morgane Halimi, Sotheby’s global head of handbags and fashion, stated that the dress holds a unique place in fashion history, transcending design to become part of cultural history. The dress was previously sold at a charity auction in 1997, raising £39,098, which is approximately £100,000 in today's money.
