  • The Digital Gilt Instrument (DIGIT) is scheduled for issuance in Q1 2027.
  • The government intends to prepare for potential further DIGIT issuances after the first transaction.
  • 16 firms are participating in the Digital Securities Sandbox, with one firm recently approved for live activity.

The UK government is progressing its digital finance initiatives, with the Digital Gilt Instrument (DIGIT) expected to be issued in the first quarter of 2027. This instrument is considered critical for establishing the foundations of a broader digital market ecosystem.

Following the initial issuance, the government has announced its intention to prepare for potential further issuances, subject to the success of the first transaction.

The Economic Secretary to the Treasury highlighted that the digitalisation of wholesale financial markets is now a national endeavour, requiring collaboration between industry, government, and regulators. This builds on work such as the first report from the UK’s Wholesale Digital Markets Champion, Chris Woolard, which sets out an industry-led roadmap for accelerating digitalisation.

The Digital Securities Sandbox is also facilitating innovation, with 16 firms currently participating. One firm has recently received approval to conduct live activity within the sandbox.

Why this matters: The digitalisation of wholesale financial markets is seen as a national endeavour to maintain and enhance the UK's global competitiveness.
