Founded in late 2022 by former Lux Capital partners Zavian Dar and Adam Goulburn, alongside Nan Li from Obvious Ventures, the New York-based firm invests at the crossroads of science and computing. The rapid growth of its funds reflects a surge of investor appetite for deep-tech startups that blur the lines between biotechnology and artificial intelligence.
Dimension's thesis — that founders would increasingly build companies combining biological research with advanced software — has played out faster than its partners anticipated. Recent successes include Chai Discovery, a startup developing open-source AI foundation models for drug development. Dimension co-led a $30 million seed round in Chai Discovery in 2024; last week, the startup raised $400 million at a $3.8 billion valuation. Another portfolio company, anti-aging biotech New Limit, co-founded by Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong, completed a Series C this month at a $3.1 billion valuation, following Dimension's Series A backing in January 2025.
The firm also holds stakes in inference company Modal Labs and AI giant Anthropic, having received shares in Anthropic after it acquired Dimension's portfolio company, drug discovery platform Coefficient Bio, earlier this year for a reported $400 million. These exits and mark-ups underscore the growing value of startups that apply computational methods to life sciences.
For UK businesses and investors, the trend signals both opportunity and competitive pressure. The UK has a strong base in life sciences and AI research, but faces challenges in scaling deep-tech startups to the levels seen in the US. The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) is currently consulting on AI and biotech data use, while the EU AI Act introduces new compliance requirements for any firm operating in European markets. UK startups in this space may need to align with both frameworks to attract international capital.
Experts warn that while the convergence of science and compute offers transformative potential — from faster drug discovery to longevity treatments — it also raises risks around data privacy, algorithmic bias in clinical models, and high capital intensity. 'The UK must ensure its regulatory environment encourages innovation without stifling it,' said one technology policy analyst. 'If we don't keep pace with US venture funding, we risk losing our best science-AI talent to American firms.'
