A 65-year-old doctor, Dr Vincent Brown, has appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court, becoming the first person in the UK to be charged over the 1994 Rwanda genocide.
Dr Brown, who is in custody, confirmed his name and address from the dock. He faces a charge of conduct ancillary to genocide and six offences of conduct ancillary to murder, as a crime against humanity. These charges stem from an alleged slaughter in the Rugenge district of Kigali between 6 April and 13 April 1994.
Prosecutors allege Dr Brown is accused of "killing, directing or encouraging" the deaths of members of the Tutsi ethnic group, and intending to destroy the group "as a whole or in part." The alleged victims include Dominique Mukurarinda, Immaculee Mukankusi, Gerasi Rurangirwa, Leandre Mbogoye, Charlotte Kamaguja and Olivier Tuyishime.
Dr Brown's barrister, Sam Blom-Cooper, stated in court that his client denies the allegations and wishes to go before a jury to clear his name. The case has been transferred to the Old Bailey for a hearing scheduled for 9 October, with a bail application to be considered later today.
