Two stars celebrated for their iconic roles in Doctor Who, David Tennant and Jodie Whittaker, are set to join the ensemble cast of the acclaimed Disney+ series Only Murders in the Building for its sixth season. The upcoming instalment will notably shift its setting across the Atlantic, with the action taking place in London for the first time, marking a significant departure from its usual New York City backdrop.
David Tennant, aged 55, widely recognised for his portrayals of the 10th and 14th Doctors, will appear alongside a host of new talent. This includes Jodie Whittaker, who previously embodied the 13th Doctor between 2018 and 2022. The casting news was officially confirmed via the show's social media channels and Disney+, accompanied by a playful message encouraging fans to 'keep calm and update the case file'.
Beyond the Doctor Who alumni, the new season boasts an impressive roster of British talent. Nicola Coughlan, known for her roles in Derry Girls and Bridgerton, and veteran actor Jim Broadbent, whose extensive filmography includes Moulin Rouge and the Paddington series, are also joining. Richard Ayoade from The IT Crowd, Adrian Lukis of The Bill fame, and Kathryn Hunter, who has appeared in the Harry Potter films and Andor, further bolster the star-studded line-up.
Only Murders in the Building centres on a trio of true-crime podcast enthusiasts – played by Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez – who find themselves embroiled in real-life murder investigations within their upscale New York apartment building. The series has garnered substantial critical acclaim since its debut, accumulating 49 Emmy nominations and winning seven across its first five seasons, solidifying its status as a significant streaming hit.
The upcoming season, consisting of 10 episodes, will also feature additional British actors such as Jamie Demetriou, Jane Horrocks, Anjana Vasan, Derek Jacobi, and Lesley Nicol. Furthermore, it was confirmed last week that Spice Girl Geri Halliwell-Horner and Emmy-winning actor Martin Freeman had also signed on, continuing the show's tradition of attracting high-profile guest stars. Previous seasons have seen appearances from Oscar winners Meryl Streep and Da’Vine Joy Randolph, among others.
