Dolly Parton's charity has announced an annual fundraising event, 'Give Like Dolly Day', in memory of the country music star. The initiative, set to occur every year on September 25, aims to encourage direct donations to her book-giving programme, The Imagination Library.
The Imagination Library focuses on promoting a passion for reading among children under the age of five by delivering free, high-quality books to their homes each month. Parton established the programme in 1995 in honour of her father, who was unable to read or write.
Parton, known for hits such as '9 to 5' and 'Jolene', passed away last month at 80 years old following a battle with cancer. Jeff Conyers, president of The Dollywood Foundation, stated that Parton believed in helping people, especially children, and felt that those in a position to help should do so.
The campaign seeks to expand the programme into new communities globally through contributions to regional partners. The Imagination Library has grown to become the world's largest early-childhood book-gifting programme, having provided over 300 million books to children across five countries, including the UK.
Activities are planned across the UK leading up to 'Give Like Dolly Day', including an event at the British Library and Parton-inspired workshops at Hobbycraft stores.
