A Doncaster husband has donated a kidney to his wife, 15 months after her previous transplanted organ began to fail. Fiona Hulbert, 55, received the kidney from her husband Phil, 55, in a procedure at Northern General Hospital in Sheffield.
Mrs Hulbert had previously received a kidney donation from her brother 18 years ago, after her own kidneys were damaged by lupus. However, the organ began to fail 15 months ago, leading to four dialysis sessions a week.
The transplant operation, which took place on 22 September 2026, involved a complex seven-hour procedure to remove Phil's kidney, requiring a switch from a keyhole to a more invasive open procedure. Surgeons then successfully transplanted the kidney into Fiona.
Five weeks after the surgery, the couple, who have a 26-year-old daughter, are recovering at their home in Scawthorpe. Mrs Hulbert has been advised to isolate for three months to prevent infection.
