A 10-year-old tennis prodigy from Doncaster, Hunter Henderson, has made headlines by winning the Smrikva Bowl, a significant junior international tournament held in Croatia. The achievement places Hunter in esteemed company, as past finalists of the event include current world number three Carlos Alcaraz, who was runner-up in 2013, and former US Open champion Dominic Thiem, who won in 2003.
Hunter, who began playing tennis at the age of three, expressed his elation, stating he felt like 'part of British tennis history' after securing the title. His dedication to the sport is evident in a demanding schedule that sees him training five days a week. This commitment, alongside that of his younger sister Halo, also a talented player, necessitates home schooling to provide the flexibility required for their sporting pursuits.
The family, based in Bawtry, faces logistical challenges due to the absence of indoor tennis courts in Doncaster. This means regular journeys to Leeds and Sheffield for advanced coaching sessions, a commitment his father, former Sheffield United and Doncaster Rovers footballer Darius Henderson, says Hunter fully embraces. Darius noted that Hunter 'kind of drives it himself now,' understanding early on that increased training was essential for success.
Hunter's mother, Laura, shared her pride, confirming that her son's photograph will now be displayed at the Smrikva Bowl venue, joining the ranks of previous notable players. Beyond his tournament success, Hunter also looks up to former British number one Jack Draper, whom he met at the National Tennis Centre in London. During their encounter, Draper reportedly gave Hunter a signed hat and sweatbands, a memorable experience for the young player.
The aspiring tennis star has already experienced the atmosphere of three of the four Grand Slam events – Wimbledon, the French Open, and the US Open – as well as the Olympic Games, watching his heroes compete. His parents acknowledge the challenging path ahead in a highly competitive sport but are committed to supporting Hunter's journey, emphasising that his passion currently remains strong.
