The dark cloud that descended over the Donegal International Rally on Saturday afternoon has left fans reeling, as two spectators were rushed to Letterkenny University Hospital following an accident during the Gartan stage. The incident brought the curtain down on what was shaping up to be a thrilling day's racing, with the immediate cancellation of the final two stages scheduled for the day.
The Gartan stage had been touted as one of the most challenging and exhilarating on the rally circuit, but it proved to be a turning point in more ways than one. With 12 stages already completed out of a total of 20, the action had been hotting up – Kris Meeke, five-time World Rally Championship winner, was leading the pack by a significant margin, with co-driver Liam Regan holding steady alongside him.
The battle for supremacy was heating up, with Callum Devine and navigator Noel O'Sullivan pushing hard to snatch the top spot from Meeke. Josh McErlean and Eoin Treacy were hot on their heels in third place, just 31.6 seconds behind the leaders, while Philip Allen and Craig Drew brought up the rear in fourth.
But before the day's events took a dramatic turn for the worse, Meeke had already established a commanding lead – an 11.8-second advantage over Devine and McErlean after Friday's six stages. It was shaping up to be one for the books, but sadly, it wasn't meant to be.
Meanwhile, Michael Dunlop, Isle of Man TT record holder, had made a dramatic return to the rally on Saturday morning, rejoining the fray in his modified Ford Escort after a mechanical issue forced him out of Friday's stages. It remains to be seen whether he'll make up for lost time – but one thing is certain: Sunday will bring a whole new set of challenges for drivers and spectators alike.
