The roads of Suffolk were brought close to disaster on 29 March when a motorist, driving erratically on the A140 between Brome and Yaxley, left witnesses fearing for their safety. Thankfully, swift action by Suffolk Police prevented a potential catastrophe, thanks in part to the vigilance of a concerned member of the public who called 999 to report the incident.
Footage released by the police shows the vehicle repeatedly veering onto the verge and crossing into the path of oncoming traffic, prompting the caller to follow and record the alarming movements. The motorist's actions were eventually brought under control after being stopped by officers, who administered a roadside breath test – which he failed.
A subsequent test at Martlesham Police Investigation Centre revealed a shocking reading: 196 micrograms (mg) per 100 millilitres of breath. This figure is more than five times the 35mg legal limit in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, highlighting the extreme danger posed by this individual's actions.
The driver, a 41-year-old man, faced justice at Ipswich Magistrates' Court, where he was ordered to undergo a three-year driving disqualification – a penalty that can be reduced by 36 weeks upon completion of an approved driving course. This provision aims to rehabilitate offenders and reduce the likelihood of repeat behaviour.
In addition to his loss of licence, the man was also required to pay £949 in financial penalties, a sum encompassing a fine, court costs, and a victim surcharge, underscoring the severity of this offence and the significant resources invested by the police and judicial system to address it.
