Drought recovery could take months, say scientists, despite recent rain

Recent rainfall in parts of the UK is unlikely to end the current drought quickly, with full recovery of water resources potentially taking months, according to scientists.

Despite recent rainfall across parts of the UK, scientists indicate that a few days of rain are insufficient to end the ongoing drought. The recovery of water resources, including rivers, reservoirs, and underground stores, could take months.

Dr Katie Facer-Childs from the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology explained that the drought is not solely due to a lack of rainfall but also higher-than-average temperatures. The UK has experienced meteorological, soil moisture, and river flow droughts this year.

However, Dr Facer-Childs noted that the country has not yet reached severe groundwater and reservoir drought. The British Geological Survey reports that nearly half of groundwater sites are at normal levels, with none currently at record lows.

The first clear indication of drought recovery is typically expected in late autumn and winter, when experts can assess if water is moving into underground aquifers. Dr Kevin Collins of The Open University stated that sustained rainfall over months is needed, rather than just heavy downpours.

Hydrologists anticipate knowing by February or March whether aquifers and human-made reservoirs have been replenished. Recovery from environmental impacts, however, could take years. A dry winter would worsen the current drought and increase government concerns.

Professor Tim Palmer of Oxford University warned that a lack of sufficient rain this winter would be "catastrophic" for the UK next year. There are some signals for a wetter-than-average autumn over Europe, potentially linked to global ocean changes and the developing El Niño phenomenon, though considerable uncertainty remains.

Scientists also highlight new challenges, as extremely dry conditions can lead to flash flooding when heavy rain occurs, because the land cannot absorb water effectively. This creates a cycle of rapid swings between drought and flooding, known as weather whiplash, which is expected to worsen as the climate warms.
