Ireland's Eddie Dunbar, 30, powered to victory in the 19th stage of the Vuelta a Espana on Friday, catching and passing Santiago Buitrago just 300 metres from the finish line. Dunbar, riding for Pinarello-Q36.5, timed his counter-attack perfectly on the hilly 210.8km stage from Velez-Malaga to Penas Blancas, crossing the line 14 seconds ahead of Buitrago.
Meanwhile, Spain's Enric Mas of Movistar successfully defended his overall lead despite efforts from general classification rivals Primoz Roglic and Richard Carapaz to increase the pace on the final 18km climb. Mas, 31, now holds a cushion of one minute and 37 seconds over Roglic heading into Saturday's mountain stage.
Britain's Oscar Onley (Netcompany Ineos) finished alongside the leading contenders, maintaining his fifth position overall and retaining the white jersey for the best young rider. The Vuelta a Espana concludes on Sunday with a 112km stage in Granada, where Mas will aim to seal his first Grand Tour title.
