Dramatic news for aficionados of the world's finest spirits: Duncan Taylor is unleashing a whisky bonanza with the expansion of its award-winning Octave collection. This powerhouse of innovation has just welcomed nearly 1,000 new casks to its ranks, effectively doubling its existing stock levels in response to skyrocketing global demand.
The secret behind this sensational success lies in the use of smaller, one-eighth-sized casks – each holding a mere 64 litres – which accelerate the second maturation phase of whisky. This clever technique, rooted in practices from the 1970s, maximises the wood-to-liquid surface area ratio, resulting in a rapid and profound transformation of the whisky's flavour profile. Each Octave cask typically yields between 85 and 90 bottles, making it a treasure trove for connoisseurs.
Duncan Taylor is not resting on its laurels, however – far from it! The company has also introduced exciting new finishing options within the Octave range this year, including Jamaican rum, port, and Madeira. This bold move follows a period of sustained success, with the Octave portfolio accumulating an impressive 55 global awards since 2009. Notably, their Octave Premium Strathclyde was crowned the World's Best Single Cask Single Grain at the prestigious World Whisky Awards last year.
Ian Logan, Senior Spirits Manager at Duncan Taylor, commented on the expansion: “The ongoing success of our Octave range is now enabling us to push the boundaries for experimenting with new finishes. From our vast collection of whiskies, we always want to ensure that we keep the original character from the distillery whilst adding a layer of complexity to it.” Logan also shared his personal favourite, a 15-year-old Royal Brackla finished in a first-fill Ruby Port Octave, which he described as showcasing an abundance of red berries, honeyed fruit preserve, and sweet syrup.
But Duncan Taylor's ambitions extend far beyond the product itself. Last year, the company updated its packaging designs to align with its environmental sustainability ethos – a move that further solidifies its position as a leader in innovative whisky maturation. With an extensive private collection of vintage and rare whiskies at its disposal, this powerhouse of whisky expertise is now 'Octivating' every distillery's whisky held in its Scottish warehouse.
