A study has found that children identified with developmental difficulties through the statutory early years foundation stage profile (EYFSP) school assessment are significantly more likely to be not in education, employment or training (Neets) in late adolescence.
The research, which is central to a current debate, suggests that the EYFSP can reveal the holistic educational needs of children. However, teachers cannot diagnose complex conditions or address wider societal issues.
Campaigns such as Child of the North and Centre for Young Lives argue that children's lives are influenced by various factors, including health, education, social care, and economic policy. They suggest that early warning signs for future NEET status appear years before late adolescence, when intervention could be effective.
