East Midlands Railway Reduces Services Amid Issues with New Hitachi Trains

East Midlands Railway (EMR) is reducing train services 'until further notice' due to ongoing reliability problems with its new Hitachi Rail-manufactured Class 810 'Aurora' fleet. This follows a three-year delay in the fleet's introduction and recent warm weather-related disruptions.

  • EMR has reduced Intercity services to and from London St Pancras 'until further notice'.
  • The problems stem from the new Class 810 'Aurora' trains, manufactured by Hitachi Rail.
  • The new fleet was introduced in December 2025, following a three-year delay.
  • Customers with cancelled services can travel on two earlier or two later trains, or request a full refund.

The cuts will affect Intercity services connecting London St Pancras with Leicester, Nottingham, Lincoln, Derby, and Sheffield. Those who have booked tickets for cancelled trains can travel on up to two earlier or later services, while others can claim a full refund. An EMR spokesperson blamed the combined impact of the delay and ongoing issues with both new and existing Class 222 fleets.

The new fleet meets all safety standards but reliability remains a concern. The rollout will continue 'in a controlled manner' throughout this year and into 2027, EMR confirmed. Local politicians and rail passenger groups have expressed disappointment with the service reduction. Bruce Williamson from Railfuture called it a 'step in the wrong direction', while Harborough MP Neil O'Brien described the situation as a 'total mess'. EMR apologised for the disruption.

Why this matters: This affects thousands of commuters and intercity travellers relying on East Midlands Railway services, causing significant inconvenience and potentially impacting travel plans and daily routines across a major UK rail corridor.

What this means for you: What this means for you: If you use East Midlands Railway's Intercity services, especially those connecting to London St Pancras, you should check the revised timetable for potential cancellations or changes to your journey and be aware of your options for alternative travel or refunds.
