Echodyne Boosts Radar Production Amid Soaring Global C-UAS Demand

Echodyne, a US-based advanced radar technology company, has officially opened a new manufacturing facility in Washington State, dramatically increasing its production capabilities to address the escalating global demand for counter-unmanned aircraft systems (C-UAS) and short-range air defence. The new 86,350-square-foot site is designed to manufacture more than 30,000 radars annually, a significant boost intended to supply both US and allied customers.

The move comes as governments worldwide accelerate investment in defensive measures against drones, a threat highlighted by their widespread use in conflicts such as the ongoing Russian War in Ukraine. The low cost and high utility of drones have fundamentally altered security requirements for defence, national security, and critical infrastructure, driving a pressing need for advanced safety and security sensors. Furthermore, the burgeoning 'low altitude economy', encompassing various commercial and life-saving drone missions, necessitates robust sensor infrastructure to monitor airspace activity.

Echodyne's investment of $40 million into this state-of-the-art facility is set to create over 100 new jobs, potentially rising to 200 as the site reaches full production capacity. The company plans to transition all manufacturing operations from its headquarters to this new hub in the coming months, establishing a dedicated centre for sustained production growth across its radar portfolio. This expansion is critical for meeting what CEO Eben Frankenberg describes as a 'mass' demand, stating that 'the only way to defend against mass is with mass', which requires scalable, high-performance radar production.

The demand for high-performance radar extends beyond C-UAS, encompassing applications such as force protection, border security, intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, and the protection of critical infrastructure. Echodyne's patented Metamaterials Electronically Scanned Array (MESA®) architecture is central to its offering. Unlike traditional electronically scanned array radars, MESA® technology employs a simpler design for electronic beam steering, allowing for manufacturing using standard materials and scalable commercial processes. This approach delivers high-fidelity radar performance while reducing the size, weight, power, complexity, and cost typically associated with such advanced systems.

The UK, like many other nations, is grappling with the growing threat posed by both state and non-state actors utilising drones for various purposes, from surveillance to direct attacks.
