Editors, the acclaimed Birmingham-formed band, have officially announced their eighth studio album, titled 'Surface, Echo & Sound'. The record is scheduled for release on October 30 via Play It Again Sam and will feature 11 tracks, including their new single 'The Rush' and the previously shared 'Call It In'. This new offering follows their 2022 album, 'EBM'.
The creation of 'Surface, Echo & Sound' saw the band return to a more collaborative, organic songwriting process. Frontman Tom Smith brought acoustic-based song ideas to the group, allowing them to collectively develop the tracks. This approach harks back to their early days rehearsing in Stafford and contrasts with the studio-centric methods used for their more recent albums. Smith described the recording period in Gloucestershire as a "very productive summer," highlighting the relaxed, green setting.
'The Rush', the album's lead single, is depicted by Smith as an imagined bar scene where two individuals reflect on life's journey, finding solace in shared experiences. This theme of comfort derived from close relationships – friends, loved ones, and family – is a recurring motif in his songwriting. The track also introduces the mandolin into Editors' sound, an instrument Smith plays, which guitarist and album producer Justin Lockey notes brings a unique, warm texture and contributes significantly to the record's rhythmic elements.
Accompanying 'The Rush' is an official music video filmed in Tokyo, directed by Henry Ehara, known for his work focusing on bodily expression and movement. The album's full tracklist includes titles such as 'Rescue', 'Shadow', and 'Happiness'.
In support of the new album, Editors have already announced a UK and European tour for 2027, with additional dates recently confirmed in Amsterdam and Antwerp. The tour includes a notable performance at the new 3,500-capacity venue, The Warehouse, at Birmingham's Villa Park, offering fans across the UK and continent opportunities to experience their new material live.
