Imagi, an edtech company focused on equipping students with essential coding and AI literacy skills, has announced a successful $4.5 million seed funding round. The investment, backed by prominent names including Brighteye Ventures, Day One Capital, and musician Will.i.am, will significantly bolster the firm's mission to integrate advanced technological education into school curricula globally.
Founded in 2018 by Dora Palfi and Beatrice Ionascu, Imagi aims to provide K-12 students and their teachers with the necessary tools and curriculum to master coding, fundamental computer skills, and, more recently, AI literacy. Palfi, who comes from a family of educators, emphasises the transformative power of education and the critical need for young people to engage proactively with emerging technologies like artificial intelligence.
A notable development for Imagi is its partnership with the 'vibe coding' tool Lovable, which was announced last November. This collaboration enables teachers to construct lessons and grant students supervised access to the platform, facilitating learning in AI coding within a secure framework. Crucially, OpenAI has contributed $1 million in credits, ensuring that schools can access the Imagi x Lovable tool without charge, providing free trials and freemium access to a wider audience.
The platform's approach addresses the ongoing debate surrounding AI deployment in educational settings. Imagi focuses on 'safe deployment,' meaning every prompt and response generated within the system is rigorously screened, with any violations removed before reaching students. Furthermore, Imagi adheres to stringent data privacy regulations, including the EU's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), guaranteeing zero data retention and ensuring that partners do not train their AI models on student data or activity. The company also provides comprehensive training for teachers, empowering them to confidently instruct students in AI, coding, and computational tools.
With over 700,000 students in 140 countries having already engaged with Imagi's programmes, this fresh injection of capital is earmarked for ambitious expansion plans. The funds will facilitate scaling into more K-12 schools, investing in district sales initiatives, expanding the team through new hires, developing innovative product features, and supporting the launch of a new platform scheduled for next month. This strategic investment underscores a growing recognition of the importance of early AI education in preparing the next generation for an evolving job market.
