The remains of the enslaver Edward Colston are likely to remain interred in All Saints church in Bristol, should the currently unused building be given a new role as a community resource. The Very Rev Mandy Ford, Dean of Bristol, indicated that Colston's remains would probably stay in the church, located on one of Bristol's busiest streets.
All Saints church on Corn Street has been closed since 1984. While a final decision is pending, it appears probable that the space will be used to reflect on Bristol's connections with the slave trade.
Dean Ford cited clear guidance against disturbing Christian burials except in exceptional circumstances. She noted that a radical rebuilding of the space could present an argument for reinterment, but otherwise, the assumption is that Christian burial is permanent.
The diocese of Bristol has been consulting with local residents regarding the future of the church. It is expected to be many months before a final decision is made on All Saints.
