Edwidge Danticat has released her first novel in over a decade, titled Dèy. Set in Miami in 2018, the story begins with Magnolia, a daughter of Haitian parents, experiencing gunfire in a mall while shopping for her own daughter's birthday present.
Magnolia, who works in property, grapples with the aftermath of the mall incident, finding herself rattled and unable to confide in others. The novel explores her anxieties about her daughter's future and her parents' health, alongside broader themes of violence.
The narrative also touches on news reports of violence in places like Ramallah, Yemen, and Congo, as well as daily life in Haiti, where gangs are reported to abduct young girls, torch homes, and storm schools and churches.
