A major project to enhance Egremont has received additional funding, bringing the total investment to £9.8 million. This funding aims to create new community spaces, support local businesses, and attract more visitors to the town.
Egremont Town Team and Cumberland Council had initially secured £3 million from the Borderlands Inclusive Growth Fund. Further support has now been provided by Sellafield Ltd, the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA), the Decommissioning and Nuclear Waste Partnership (DNWP), and Copeland Community Fund.
The investment will facilitate improvements across several areas of the town. Plans include redeveloping the former Red Lion site to feature new public space, a wellbeing centre, workshop units, and retail units. The Florence Arts Centre is set to gain a new performance space, café, heritage area, artists’ studios, and improved outdoor space, alongside repairs to historic mine buildings.
Additionally, the project will enhance signs, footpaths, and routes within the town to improve accessibility for visitors. Construction work at the former Red Lion site and Florence Arts Centre is anticipated to commence in early 2027, with an expected completion time of 12 to 18 months.
